Test-Only vs Test+Repair Smog Stations

Test-only stations just inspect. Test+repair stations inspect AND fix problems if your vehicle fails. Which should you choose? Depends on your vehicle age + history.

When to use which

Test-Only Stations

Best for:

  • Modern vehicles 2010+ with no check engine light
  • Vehicles you've kept maintained
  • Quick in-and-out inspection only
  • You don't want to be upsold on repairs

Drawback: If you fail, you have to take your car elsewhere for repair, then come back. Two trips.

Test+Repair Stations

Best for:

  • Older vehicles or recent code clears
  • Out-of-state vehicles you're newly registering
  • Diesel pickups (DPF/DEF concerns)
  • You want diagnose + fix in one visit if needed

Drawback: Slightly more expensive shop overhead — pricing is comparable, but you have to trust them.

Our network has both. If you're not sure, start with test+repair — worst case you pay the same for inspection, best case you save a trip if you fail.
