Do diesels need smog checks in California?
Yes — diesel vehicles 1998 and newer with GVWR ≤14,000 lbs need biennial smog inspection. Diesels older than 1997 are exempt. Heavy-duty diesels above 14,000 lbs follow the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program (PSIP), not smog.
What does a diesel smog check involve?
OBD-II readiness verification, visual inspection of DPF (diesel particulate filter) and EGR system, DEF tank verification (for SCR diesels), and check for tampering or aftermarket modifications.
My DPF was deleted — will my truck pass smog?
No. DPF deletion is illegal in California and an instant fail. The shop will refuse to certify a vehicle with deleted emissions equipment. Restoration to factory spec is required before retest.
How long does a diesel smog inspection take?
Typically 20-30 minutes for light-duty diesels — slightly longer than gas because of the additional visual inspection of DPF, EGR, and DEF systems.
Does diesel cost more than gas smog?
