Catalytic Converter Replacement at Muffler & Cat Depot
California-compliant CARB-approved catalytic converter replacement. We source and install OEM and aftermarket CARB-approved cats for all makes. P0420 / P0430 codes? We diagnose and fix.
Why are California catalytic converters so expensive?
CARB requires California-specific catalytic converters with higher precious metal content. Aftermarket non-CARB cats are illegal in CA. Typical CARB cat: $400-1500 vs $200-600 for non-CARB.
How long does catalytic converter replacement take?
Usually 1-3 hours depending on vehicle. Most done same-day.
Does the cat replacement fix my P0420 code?
Often yes, but not always — sometimes the P0420 is caused by an upstream issue (failing O2 sensor, oil burning, rich fuel mixture). We diagnose first to make sure cat replacement is the right fix.
Is aftermarket CARB-approved okay?
Yes — CARB-approved aftermarket cats meet California emissions law. Usually save $300-700 vs OEM. We carry both options.
Will I pass smog after replacement?
If the right cat is installed AND OBD monitors complete, yes. Drive 50-100 miles for monitors to reset. Then retest at a STAR station — Smog Check Escondido is next door.
