Common signs: louder than usual exhaust note, rattling under the car, smell of fumes in cabin, P0420 / P0171 / P0174 codes, failed smog. Bring it in for a free inspection.
Short distances yes. Long-term no — leaks can cause CO to enter the cabin (health hazard), trigger CEL, and fail smog. Get it repaired soon.
Will an exhaust leak fail smog?
Yes if it affects the O2 sensors or causes the OBD-II computer to detect a fault. EVAP system leaks especially. Get any exhaust leak fixed before smog test.
Do you do diesel exhaust work?
Yes — DPF (diesel particulate filter), DEF, EGR work on light-duty diesels. Heavy-duty diesel (over 14k lbs GVWR) falls under PSIP, not smog.
