The 10-point checklist
- Drive 30+ miles before testing — completes OBD-II readiness monitors. Mix highway + city.
- Fill gas tank above 1/4 full — low fuel triggers EVAP "not ready" codes.
- Tighten gas cap until 3 clicks — most common single failure cause.
- Confirm check engine light is OFF — if recently cleared, drive 100+ miles before testing.
- Check tire pressure — under-inflated tires can affect dynamometer test (rare in CA which uses OBD-II mostly).
- Don't change oil same week — fresh oil with low miles can affect emissions readings.
- Address known issues first — bring failed CEL codes to our shop for $50 diagnostic before paying $55-$85 for guaranteed fail.
- Bring registration + license — must match VIN exactly.
- Charge hybrid 12V auxiliary battery — if vehicle sat 30+ days, drive 50 miles before testing.
- For diesel: confirm DEF tank is full — low DEF triggers warning lights that prevent passing.
What customers most commonly miss
The single biggest preventable failure: readiness monitors not complete. This happens when:
- Battery was disconnected (any reason — new battery, repair work, dead battery)
- Mechanic cleared codes
- ECU was reflashed
- Vehicle sat unused for weeks
Solution: drive 50-100 miles of mixed driving (highway + city) before bringing the vehicle in. Most readiness monitors complete in this window.
