10-Point Smog Check Pre-Test Checklist — Pass First Try

A 10-item checklist to maximize your odds of passing California smog inspection on the first try. Save $55-$85 plus your time. Most failures are preventable with 30 minutes of prep.

Quick read: Most California smog failures are preventable. This 10-item checklist takes about 30 minutes to complete and dramatically improves your pass rate. Best of all, most items cost $0.

The 10-point checklist

  1. Drive 30+ miles before testing — completes OBD-II readiness monitors. Mix highway + city.
  2. Fill gas tank above 1/4 full — low fuel triggers EVAP "not ready" codes.
  3. Tighten gas cap until 3 clicks — most common single failure cause.
  4. Confirm check engine light is OFF — if recently cleared, drive 100+ miles before testing.
  5. Check tire pressure — under-inflated tires can affect dynamometer test (rare in CA which uses OBD-II mostly).
  6. Don't change oil same week — fresh oil with low miles can affect emissions readings.
  7. Address known issues first — bring failed CEL codes to our shop for $50 diagnostic before paying $55-$85 for guaranteed fail.
  8. Bring registration + license — must match VIN exactly.
  9. Charge hybrid 12V auxiliary battery — if vehicle sat 30+ days, drive 50 miles before testing.
  10. For diesel: confirm DEF tank is full — low DEF triggers warning lights that prevent passing.

What customers most commonly miss

The single biggest preventable failure: readiness monitors not complete. This happens when:

  • Battery was disconnected (any reason — new battery, repair work, dead battery)
  • Mechanic cleared codes
  • ECU was reflashed
  • Vehicle sat unused for weeks

Solution: drive 50-100 miles of mixed driving (highway + city) before bringing the vehicle in. Most readiness monitors complete in this window.

Free pre-test scan

Our shops offer a free OBD-II readiness scan for first-time customers. We plug in, scan for active codes + monitor status, and tell you if you're ready to test or need more drive time. Saves you the failed-inspection fee.
