Which Vehicles Are Exempt from California Smog Check?
California exempts: pre-1976 vehicles (any type), all motorcycles, all 100%-electric vehicles (BEVs), and trailers/RVs without engines. Diesel vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR use different program (PSIP). Hybrids + PHEVs are NOT exempt — they still need smog.
Key facts
- ✓ Pre-1976 vehicles — fully exempt (any type)
- ✓ Motorcycles + scooters — fully exempt
- ✓ 100% Electric vehicles (BEVs) — exempt (Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, etc.)
- ✓ Trailers + RV trailers — no engine, no smog
- ❌ Hybrids + PHEVs — NOT exempt (still need biennial smog)
- ✓ Diesel >14,000 lbs GVWR — uses PSIP program instead of biennial smog
- ✓ 1976-1997 vehicles — required but visual+functional only (no tailpipe probe)
What to do
- Check your vehicle's model year — pre-1976 = exempt
- If electric (BEV): no smog needed, just DMV registration
- If motorcycle: no smog needed at any year
- If hybrid/PHEV: smog required (don't assume exempt)
- If unsure: bring registration to our shop — we verify with BAR + DMV (free)
Common questions
Is my electric car exempt?
If it's a 100%-battery-electric vehicle (BEV) with no gasoline engine: yes, fully exempt. This includes Tesla (all models), Rivian, Lucid, Ford Lightning + Mach-E, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, Kia EV6/EV9, and similar.
Is my hybrid exempt?
No. Standard hybrids (Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, etc.) still need biennial smog. Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) like Prius Prime, RAV4 Prime, Wrangler 4xe — also still required.
What about my classic 1968 muscle car?
Pre-1976 vehicles are fully exempt from biennial smog. Just register normally with DMV — no inspection needed. If you do an engine swap to a newer engine, the emissions standards follow the ENGINE year, so a newer engine in an older body may require smog.
