Classic + Vintage Car Smog Check California
Vehicles manufactured before 1976 (model year ≤ 1975) are 100% exempt from California smog inspection. Vehicles 1976-1997 follow visual + functional inspection only (no tailpipe probe). 1998+ classic cars are inspected like modern cars.
Overview
California categorizes classic cars in three tiers: (1) Pre-1976 — fully exempt. (2) 1976-1997 — required but uses visual + functional inspection only (no tailpipe analysis). (3) 1998+ — full standard inspection using OBD-II + tailpipe protocols. Original-condition classics are usually fine; modified or restomod cars often need adjustments.
Key facts
- ✓ 1975 + older: Fully exempt — no smog check ever required
- ✓ 1976-1997 gasoline: Visual + functional inspection only. No tailpipe probe.
- ✓ 1998 + newer: Full standard inspection (OBD-II + emissions equipment check)
- ⚠ Watch out: Engine swaps (newer engine in older body) can change inspection requirements. Smog rules follow ENGINE YEAR, not body year.
- ⚠ Modified classics: Aftermarket cams, intakes, exhausts can fail visual inspection if they don't match the CARB EO numbers for that vehicle's emissions config.
Common questions
Is my classic car exempt from smog?
If it's a 1975 model year or older, yes — fully exempt. If it's 1976-1997, you still need a smog check but only visual + functional (no tailpipe test). If it's 1998+, full standard inspection.
What if I did an engine swap?
Smog rules follow the engine year, not the body year. A 1970 Camaro with a 2020 LS3 swap is inspected as a 2020-emissions vehicle. The engine must match the body-year emissions standards OR be a CARB-approved newer engine swap.
Are aftermarket parts allowed?
Only if they have a CARB Executive Order (EO) number proving they meet emissions standards for your specific vehicle. We can check EO eligibility during inspection.
