What to know — European smog rules in California
Do European cars need a special smog check in California? No special procedure — European vehicles use the same OBD-II protocol, but they have known EVAP and readiness-monitor quirks that require extra attention before testing.
- European OBD implementations sometimes report more readiness monitors than domestic vehicles, increasing odds of 'not ready' failures.
- BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz have frequent EVAP leak codes (small purge valve and charcoal canister issues) that trigger MIL before owners notice.
- Volkswagen TDI diesel models (2009-2015) require confirmed Dieselgate recall completion before passing California smog.
- Cooling system faults and oil consumption issues on BMW N-series engines can push O2 sensor readings out of range.
- Mercedes-Benz BlueTec diesel models require an intact AdBlue/DEF system — tampering causes immediate fail.
Per BAR OBD-II inspection protocol and CARB emissions equipment rules.
