Equipment check
Tech visually inspects emissions equipment — catalytic converter, EGR, EVAP, gas cap. Looks for tampering or missing parts. Diesel-specific checks for DPF/DEF/EGR integrity.

STEP 05 · FUNCTIONAL INSPECTION
Performance check (older vehicles)
For 1976-1995 vehicles, tech runs the engine + checks specific emissions parameters. 1996+ vehicles use OBD-II for most of this automatically.

Emissions analyzer
Pre-1996 vehicles require tailpipe gas analysis. 1996+ uses OBD-II instead. Hybrids and BEVs have different protocols.

🚗 Standard Gas Vehicles (1996+)

🏎 Pre-1996 Vehicles
Tailpipe gas analysis + visual + functional. ~20-30 min. Classic car rules apply.
⚡ Hybrid Vehicles

What you need to bring
- Vehicle registration — current registration or DMV renewal notice
- Driver's license or government photo ID
- Payment — cash, debit, or credit card (some shops also accept Apple Pay)
- Out-of-state title — only if registering a vehicle new to California
- REG 343 form — only if doing CA registration of out-of-state vehicle
- Previous failure report — only if returning for STAR retest after a failed initial inspection
