★ 15-25 MIN · WALK-INS WELCOME · SAME-DAY DMV CERT

How It Works

A California smog check at our network takes 15-25 minutes for a standard passenger vehicle. Here's exactly what happens, step-by-step, from when you walk in to when your DMV cert is filed.

The 8 steps

  1. STEP 01 · ARRIVE

Find a shop + walk in

Drive to any of our 15 BAR-licensed locations. View locations →

⏱ 2 minutes — no appointment, no wait list

  2. STEP 02 · CHECK IN

    Hand over registration + ID

Bilingual staff records your vehicle info + payment method. Need (760) 800-SMOG coupon? Just mention it.

    ⏱ 3 minutes — bilingual paperwork

  3. STEP 03 · OBD-II SCAN

    Computer scan

Tech plugs scanner into your vehicle's OBD-II port. Reads stored fault codes + checks if readiness monitors are complete.

    ⏱ 3 minutes — automated diagnostic read

  4. STEP 04 · VISUAL INSPECTION

    Equipment check

Tech visually inspects emissions equipment — catalytic converter, EGR, EVAP, gas cap. Looks for tampering or missing parts. Diesel-specific checks for DPF/DEF/EGR integrity.

    ⏱ 5 minutes — under-hood + tailpipe walk-around

  5. STEP 05 · FUNCTIONAL INSPECTION

    Performance check (older vehicles)

For 1976-1995 vehicles, tech runs the engine + checks specific emissions parameters. 1996+ vehicles use OBD-II for most of this automatically.

⏱ 5 minutes — skipped on most modern vehicles

  6. STEP 06 · TAILPIPE TEST (IF APPLICABLE)

    Emissions analyzer

Pre-1996 vehicles require tailpipe gas analysis. 1996+ uses OBD-II instead. Hybrids and BEVs have different protocols.

    ⏱ 5 minutes — pre-1996 vehicles only

  7. STEP 07 · RESULT

    Pass or fail determination

Tech reviews all readings. Pass = electronic DMV cert filed within minutes. Fail = printed report with specific codes + cause.

    ⏱ 2 minutes — paperwork + cert filing

  8. STEP 08 · DONE

    You're out the door

Pass + DMV cert filed. Total elapsed: 15-25 minutes for a standard vehicle. Fail? Here's what to do next.

    ⏱ Total: 15-25 min for standard vehicles · 25-40 min for diesel/hybrid

Process variations by vehicle type

🚗 Standard Gas Vehicles (1996+)

OBD-II scan + visual inspection. ~15-25 min. $55-$85 + $8.25 state fee.

🏎 Pre-1996 Vehicles

Tailpipe gas analysis + visual + functional. ~20-30 min. Classic car rules apply.

⚡ Hybrid Vehicles

OBD-II only (no tailpipe). ~15-25 min. Drive 30+ miles before testing. Hybrid guide.

🛻 Diesel (1998+)

OBD-II + extensive visual (DPF/EGR/DEF). ~25-40 min. Deleted emissions = fail. Diesel guide.

🔋 EV / Tesla (BEV)

EXEMPT from smog. DMV verification only if needed. ~5 min. EV exemption guide.

🏍 Motorcycles

EXEMPT — California never required motorcycle smog. Motorcycle guide.
