What STAR Certification Means — California's Authorized Smog Retest Program
STAR-certified stations meet stricter California state requirements and are the only ones authorized to perform mandatory retests after a vehicle fails. Here's what STAR designation actually means and why it matters when you're picking a shop.
Quick read: A STAR-certified smog station has passed additional California state audits beyond standard BAR licensing. They're the only stations authorized to perform mandatory retests when the DMV directs you back after a fail. Choose STAR upfront, and if you fail you can retest free at the same station within 30 days.
Why STAR exists
California's STAR Program (administered by the Bureau of Automotive Repair) is a quality-tier above standard smog station licensing. STAR stations have demonstrated higher accuracy in emissions testing, better record-keeping, and stronger compliance with state audits. The DMV uses STAR designation to filter where vehicles can retest after failing.
How STAR affects you
Three real benefits to choosing a STAR-certified station:
- If you fail, you can retest there for free — within 30 days of the original failed inspection at the same STAR station. (Note: this is the retest itself; any repair work needed is separate.)
- If the DMV directs you to retest after a failure, you MUST go to a STAR station. Going elsewhere doesn't satisfy DMV requirements.
- Quality signal — STAR stations have been audited and verified. They're operationally more consistent than non-STAR alternatives.
What STAR doesn't mean
STAR is a station-level designation, not a vehicle-level one. STAR stations test ALL vehicles using the same protocols (OBD-II, visual, functional) as non-STAR shops. The inspection itself is identical. The difference is operational quality, audit compliance, and authorization to perform required retests.

Test+repair vs test-only — quick note
STAR stations come in two flavors: test-only (smog inspection only) and test+repair (also performs repairs to address failures). Our network has both. If you fail, you may want a test+repair shop so you can diagnose, repair, and retest in one location. See which locations offer what.
