A smog check in California typically costs $30–$90. Diesel and hybrid checks are often higher. STAR and non-STAR stations each set their own posted price — there is no state-mandated STAR markup. The state's $8.25 certificate fee is separate and charged only if your vehicle passes. A passing smog certificate is valid for 90 days.
